Protect Tweets<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For privacy-minded people, securing social media accounts present a tricky trade-off between maintaining online relationships with friends and family, customers and colleagues, while controlling what personal information is available to the wider world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social media continue to be some of the most-frequent targets of major data-piracy.&nbsp; And yet using these tools is increasingly a business and social requirement.  Managing these accounts can be complicated, and many are abandoned rather than deactivated, heightening the potential for misuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below we list a few best-practices for people who are both active on social media, as well as those looking to limit and clean up the data trail of years of online-activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-use-very-strong-passwords-and-dont-use-similar-passwords-across-social-accounts\"><strong>1. Use very strong passwords, and don\u2019t use similar passwords across social accounts<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The bare minimum should be 10-12-character strings using a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.&nbsp;<strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/195430\/how-to-create-a-strong-password-and-remember-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">One popular mnemonic device<\/a><\/strong> is to use a memorable sentence as the underlying basis for the string.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: \u201cFour score and seven years ago\u2026\u201d = <em>4score&amp;7ya<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-use-two-factor-authentication-2-fa-for-logins\"><strong>2. Use two-factor authentication (2FA) for logins<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This should be a standard practice with any online accounts, but is most important for things like social media, banking, and any work-related areas.&nbsp;<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/6\/17\/15772142\/how-to-set-up-two-factor-authentication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Here\u2019s a helpful list<\/a><\/strong> of ways to enable this feature across a range of social media sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common form of two-factor authentication is for an account to send a text message to your phone with a 5-6 digit confirmation code. This is considered acceptable for most general-use sites, but for things like online-banking, or anything enabling online-payments, you should be using additional security measures due to the lower-security threshold for text-messages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-disable-location-sharing\"><strong>3. Disable location sharing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook, Twitter, and a few other sites are capable of broadcasting your current location even when you\u2019re not actively using the platforms.&nbsp; It often requires changing settings on both the desktop app as well as your personal devices. Disable legacy permissions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Longtime users of platforms like Facebook may have spent years approving 3<sup>rd<\/sup> party access to your profile and account, only for those 3<sup>rd<\/sup> parties to have gone out of business or changed ownership.&nbsp; It is highly recommended to periodically check both <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/permissions\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Google<\/strong><\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/lifehacker.com\/clean-out-your-facebook-app-permissions-as-part-of-your-5904590\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Facebook account app-permissions<\/strong><\/a>, and delete all\/any you no longer actively using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To clear legacy permissions from your Google account:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>log in to your Google account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>go to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/permissions (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/permissions\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/permissions<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>select each service individually and click \u201cRemove Access\u201d as needed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can always renew access the next time you log into those other services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To clear legacy permissions from your Facebook account:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>log in to your Facebook account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>click the down-facing arrow next to the&nbsp; (?) symbol in the upper right corner of your home page, and select \u201csettings\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>on the left sidebar of the settings page, select \u201cApps and websites\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>select each service individually to change its status<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-delete-old-email-addresses-and-any-inactive-social-media-accounts\"><strong>5. Delete old email addresses and any inactive social media accounts<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One common method of identity theft is for identity-thieves to hijack unused email accounts that may still have associated authorizations.&nbsp; You can quickly check if past addresses are defunct by checking them <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/truemail.io\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp; If it comes back \u201cInvalid\u201d, then the account is deleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are instructions for manually deleting legacy&nbsp; AOL, Hotmail, or Yahoo accounts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AOL &amp; Yahoo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With both sites now owned by Verizon Media, they share similar basic account deletion procedure<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>log in to your account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>go to either <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/yahoo.mydashboard.oath.com\/delete-my-account\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>https:\/\/yahoo.mydashboard.oath.com\/delete-my-account<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/aol.mydashboard.oath.com\/delete-my-account\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>https:\/\/aol.mydashboard.oath.com\/delete-my-account<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>re-enter the specific account-address you want deleted, and click \u201ccontinue to delete my account\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hotmail<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/account.microsoft.com\/account\/Account\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>https:\/\/account.microsoft.com\/account\/Account<\/strong><\/a> and log in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the Security tab at the top of the page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to More Security Options &gt; Explore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Close My Account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Google\/Gmail<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>log in to your Google account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>go to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/data-and-personalization\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/data-and-personalization<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>scroll down to \u201cDownload, delete, or make a plan for your data\u201d and select \u201cDelete a service or your account.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>select \u201cDelete a service\u201d on the next page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you will need to log in again&nbsp; to verify your account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>select the trash icon next to any accounts you want to delete<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you will need to instruct where Google can send a verification email (whatever email account you currently still use); go to that email in your inbox and confirm account deletion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-limit-facebook-interactions-to-known-friends-protect-tweets\"><strong>6.
