As these two harassment and intimidation techniques become more popular, it\u2019s essential that everyone is aware of what they entail. We\u2019ll cover the basics of doxxing and swatting in this guide, along with how you can keep yourself safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-doxxing\">What Is Doxxing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/doxxing\/what-is-doxxing-how-to-protect-against-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Doxxing<\/a> (also known as dropping dox or docs or doxing) occurs when someone releases your personally identifiable information &#8211; like your full name, home address, or social security number &#8211; online without your permission.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, the practice was used by hackers to \u201cout\u201d other hackers. However, recently, doxxing has become common among average internet users.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of what makes doxxing so easy is the amount of personal information that\u2019s available about most Americans on the internet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although doxxers can buy your personal information on the dark web or trick you into sharing it through social engineering attacks (including phishing emails), private information can be just as easily found through Google Search, social media accounts (such as Facebook or LinkedIn), public records, data brokers, and other online sources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may think that you don\u2019t need to worry about doxxing if you\u2019re not doing anything \u201cwrong\u201d or engaging in online harassment yourself. Unfortunately, that\u2019s not true. However, swatting is now <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/swatting-click-here-podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">becoming more common<\/a> outside of gaming circles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having an armed response team raid your home can be very distressing, and there have also been cases where people have died because of swatting. One man was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ks\/pr\/california-man-sentenced-deadly-wichita-swatting-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shot and killed<\/a> after local police received a hoax call about a hostage situation; another had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/tennessee-man-targeted-his-twitter-handle-dies-after-swatting-call-n1274747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heart attack and died<\/a> when armed police officers knocked on his door.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instigating a swatting attack is illegal, and efforts are underway by the FBI and law enforcement partners to <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/swatting-click-here-podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compile a database<\/a> of swatters and swatting incidents to help reduce them as much as possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-is-doxxing-related-to-swatting\">How Is Doxxing Related to Swatting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Doxxing can lead to swatting. That\u2019s because, for someone to swat you, they need to know where you live. In other words, your address needs to be available and accessible enough for them to find it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your contact information (including your home address) may already be publicly shared on the internet, whether you\u2019re aware of it or not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-avoid-doxxing-and-swatting\">How to Avoid Doxxing and Swatting&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since doxxing and swatting are so closely related, you can reduce the likelihood that you\u2019ll be swatted by making yourself undoxxable &#8211; or, at least, less doxxable. People will have a much harder time sending law enforcement to your residence or workplace if they don\u2019t know where those places are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To minimize the chances that you\u2019ll be doxxed, you need to shrink your online footprint. In other words, you need to remove personal information about yourself (especially your contact information) from public sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some steps you can take. Doxx yourself<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first step should be to assess where your information is currently visible on the internet. Remove yourself from data brokers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also likely find your information shared on data brokers and people search websites. Make your social account private<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be wary of what you share on your social media accounts and how much is viewable by the general public. Some social media platforms let you see how your profile looks to different audiences (friends, the public, etc.), which is a good tool to use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-follow-cybersecurity-best-practices\">5. Follow cybersecurity best practices&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, following cybersecurity best practices can keep you safer online. Common practices include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Having unique passwords for each online account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using multi-factor authentication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding public Wi-Fi networks (or using a VPN &#8211; just remember that a VPN won\u2019t protect you from malware).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"become-undoxxable-and-unswattable\">Become Undoxxable (and Unswattable)&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Removing your personal data from the internet (and, in particular, data brokers) can reduce the likelihood that you\u2019ll be doxxed or swatted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember also to avoid sharing any new data about yourself online.
