{"id":2364,"date":"2020-08-17T17:59:57","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T21:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/?p=1364"},"modified":"2020-08-17T17:59:57","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T21:59:57","slug":"consumer-attitudes-on-data-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/blog\/consumer-attitudes-on-data-privacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumer Attitudes on Data Privacy: Shifting sentiment toward Big Tech."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of July 2020, multinational consulting services firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advisory.kpmg.us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>KPMG Advisory<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released a new <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/advisory.kpmg.us\/content\/dam\/advisory\/en\/pdfs\/2020\/consumer-data-report-kpmg.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data privacy study<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, outlining results of a May 2020 poll on consumer attitudes on data privacy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some specific details are interesting, but the key conclusions are things we\u2019ve seen reiterated many times before:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2026Consumers overwhelmingly agree that data privacy is important, and they want corporations to take significant steps to better protect, manage, and ethically use their data.\u201d \u2013<\/span><\/i><b><i> KPMG, June 2020<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their headline question measuring the importance of data privacy for consumers suggested,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c87% of consumers say data privacy is a human right.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the past two decades American and international consumers have consistently ranked personal data privacy very high in lists of concerns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The level of concern around data privacy can vary slightly but in general, 75-90% of people polled will claim it to be a significant issue.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where things get more complicated is when these persistent concerns about privacy are benchmarked against questions like, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who do you think is more-responsible \u2013 Businesses, or Government &#8211; to be doing something to improve it?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where we think the wider range of recent polling data may point to interesting things overlooked by individual studies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, what we\u2019ve seen over the last five years is a subtle shift in consumer attitudes toward whether people trust companies by themselves to safeguard personal data, or whether they think active Government intervention will be required.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of annual studies that track trust-levels of institutions, and overall, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/people-trust-amazon-and-google-more-than-the-police-or-the-government-2020-01-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">private companies do remain better-trusted than the Government<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that sentiment is experiencing a slight shift in recent years, particularly with regards to data privacy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2013-2017, the primary media narrative about online data privacy tended to be related to the exposure of covert Government data surveillance programs.&nbsp; A PWC survey in 2017 pointed out that 72% of consumers believed \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/advisory-services\/publications\/consumer-intelligence-series\/protect-me\/cis-protect-me-findings.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Business, not Government, is best-equipped to protect [personal data]<\/strong>\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But since 2017 then there has been gradual erosion in the confidence levels consumers have normally placed in Big Tech.&nbsp; Facebook, in particular, has seen its <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/3\/2\/21144680\/verge-tech-survey-2020-trust-privacy-security-facebook-amazon-google-apple\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trust-levels plummet<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over that period of time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While general confidence in tech. companies remains high, feelings around data privacy are distinctly negative.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69% of respondents currently still trust companies like Google handling their personal data, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accenture.com\/t20150527T203143__w__\/us-en\/_acnmedia\/Accenture\/Conversion-Assets\/Microsites\/Documents14\/Accenture-Four-Keys-Digital-Trust.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">similar research from 2015<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had Google ranked ahead of both Amazon and Microsoft in degree of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We see further evidence of a shifting balance between \u201cTech vs. Government\u201d in other recent polling on the question of data-privacy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2019\/11\/15\/americans-and-privacy-concerned-confused-and-feeling-lack-of-control-over-their-personal-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pew published an updat<\/strong>e<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to its ongoing research into consumer attitudes towards data privacy.
