id=\"what-is-alibaba\">What Is Alibaba?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba (not to be confused with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=joindeleteme+aliexpress&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AliExpress<\/a>) is a Chinese tech company.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the company is involved in many different industries (e.g., digital media, cloud computing), it\u2019s most well-known for its B2B wholesale platform, i.e., alibaba.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"526\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibaba-2.png\" alt=\"Alibaba website\" class=\"wp-image-17276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibaba-2.png 1024w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibaba-2-300x154.png 300w, businesses and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppliers (who are usually based in China) list their products on the Alibaba website, where they can be found by businesses (e.g., manufacturers, retailers, and startups) who want to buy items in bulk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, the larger the quantity you buy, the less you pay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many suppliers on the platform can provide customization, such as custom labels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1003\" height=\"576\" has more than 200 million products from over 200,000 suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-alibaba-a-scam\">Is Alibaba a Scam?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No, Alibaba is not a scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a legitimate e-commerce platform that connects suppliers with businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba.com gets mixed reviews from users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4.1 out of 5.0 stars (from 26,082 reviews) on <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.trustpilot.com\/review\/www.alibaba.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trustpilot<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4.2 out of 5.0 stars (from 12,767 reviews) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sitejabber.com\/reviews\/alibaba.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sitejabber<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.6 out of 5.0 stars (from 40 reviews) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviews.io\/company-reviews\/store\/alibaba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REVIEWS.io<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.3 out of 5.0 stars (from 30 reviews) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbb.org\/us\/ca\/sunnyvale\/profile\/online-retailer\/alibaba-group-us-inc-1216-1531774\/customer-reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Better Business Bureau<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.28 out of 5.0 stars (from 2,616 ratings) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mouthshut.com\/product-reviews\/alibaba-reviews-925039114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MouthShut.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4.7 out of 5.0 stars (from 9,905 reviews) on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resellerratings.com\/store\/Alibaba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ResellerRatings<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.7 out of 5.0 stars (from 842 reviews) on <a href=\"https:\/\/alibaba.pissedconsumer.com\/review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PissedConsumer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most complaints are about suppliers who did not deliver the items ordered or delivered faulty items. People also claim that Alibaba often takes the supplier\u2019s side despite the customers providing evidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba itself doesn\u2019t sell products &#8211; it\u2019s a marketplace where suppliers can list their items, and businesses can buy them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any marketplace platform (e.g., eBay, Amazon Marketplace), it is possible to encounter scammers on Alibaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/smallbusiness\/comments\/wqopeo\/is_alibabacom_legit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Reddit user said<\/a>: \u201cSuppliers behind it [Alibaba] range from garbage to gold.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"708\" height=\"124\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaredditpost.png\" alt=\"Reddit post about Alibaba suppliers \" class=\"wp-image-17280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaredditpost.png 708w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaredditpost-300x53.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 708px) 100vw, 708px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Internet users recommend being cautious when buying on Alibaba. Specifically, to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check store ratings and how long a supplier has been in business for.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <a href=\"https:\/\/seller.alibaba.com\/eu\/en\/verified-supplier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cVerified\u201d<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alibaba.com\/help\/gold_supplier.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cGold\u201d<\/a> suppliers.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use Trade Assurance for buyer protection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask for samples before placing a big order.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use Alibaba\u2019s payment system.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of shipping and customs costs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AlibabaSellerBadList\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">r\/AlibabaSellerBadList<\/a> for sellers and suppliers who reportedly rip people off.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/smallbusiness\/comments\/wqopeo\/is_alibabacom_legit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Many also warn<\/a> against placing orders that involve large sums of money due to Alibaba seemingly siding with the seller.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"732\" height=\"455\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaredditorfeedback.png\" alt=\"Redditor's experience with Alibaba\" class=\"wp-image-17282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaredditorfeedback.png 732w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaredditorfeedback-300x186.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Aliexpress\/comments\/1093nih\/im_new_to_alibaba_and_am_nervous_about_buying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One person<\/a> said:<em> <\/em>\u201cTreat nothing as being &#8220;verified&#8221; or &#8220;assured&#8221;. Only buy what you can afford to loose.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba is not Better Business Bureau accredited.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buyer protection program&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, you should buy from suppliers who are part of Alibaba\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/reads.alibaba.com\/how-trade-assurance-protects-your-purchases-on-alibaba-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trade Assurance program<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trade Assurance is basically Alibaba\u2019s buyer protection program and is available to customers for free.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not every supplier is part of Alibaba\u2019s Trade Assurance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for a yellow badge or text saying \u201cTrade Assurance\u201d on the product page and\/or supplier profile. Alternatively, when you search for products, filter by \u201cTrade Assurance.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"185\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatradeassurancefilter.png\" alt=\"Alibaba &quot;Trade Assurance&quot; filter\" class=\"wp-image-17284\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With Trade Assurance, you are potentially eligible for a refund (30 days for most buyers, 60 days for Enterprise users) if the terms aren\u2019t met, with disputes mediated by Alibaba.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trade Assurance does not guarantee a full refund, though, nor does it guarantee that Alibaba will side with you over the seller.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"816\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatradeassurance.png\" alt=\"Alibaba Trade Assurance table - what it is vs what it is not \" class=\"wp-image-17286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatradeassurance.png 816w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatradeassurance-300x139.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatradeassurance-768x355.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 816px) 100vw, 816px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inspection service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re making a Trade Assurance order (see the section above), then you can also add an <a href=\"https:\/\/helpcenter.alibaba.com\/s\/buyer\/knowledge?categoryId=275875280&amp;m_station=buyer&amp;questionId=ade600a55e984e52b89929d3c9d2ce57sgvpc278077001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inspection Service<\/a> to have your order inspected before shipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Alibaba, your order <a href=\"https:\/\/activities.alibaba.com\/alibaba\/inspectionlogistics.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will be inspected<\/a> by an independent third-party inspector or company listed on the site.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inspector will go to the manufacturing facility and report back with photos to certify that the products you bought meet the quality standards you\u2019ve agreed to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Returns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some products qualify for <a href=\"https:\/\/helpcenter.alibaba.com\/s\/buyer\/knowledge?questionId=7eee0ebfdd2c4bdea3898a3ac6b279c8&amp;categoryId=1000083499&amp;categoryId=1000083499&amp;questionId2=1060995003&amp;pageId=128&amp;category=1000083499&amp;knowledge=1060995003&amp;language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cEasy Return,\u201d<\/a> which is Alibaba\u2019s service that makes returning items easier.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If possible, buy items that are eligible for Easy Return. Note that the total value of the product can\u2019t be more than $3,000, and the return must be related to issues with the product (e.g., incorrect materials or bad quality).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can only make one Easy Return request per Trade Assurance order.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Security<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tradeassurance.alibaba.com\/ta\/Payment.htm?spm=a2700.galleryofferlist.0.0.1fa713a0rNUhPW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Payments made<\/a> through Alibaba are SSL-encrypted and PCI DSS compliant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can pay with credit card, debit card, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Afterpay, Clearpay, and bank-to-bank wire transfers with escrow protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/rulechannel.alibaba.com\/icbu?spm=a2700.galleryofferlist.0.0.1fa713a0rNUhPW&amp;type=detail&amp;ruleId=2034&amp;cId=1306#\/rule\/detail?cId=1306&amp;ruleId=2034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy policy<\/a>, Alibaba says it uses <em>\u201cappropriate technical and organisational measures to prevent unauthorized access to the Platform, to maintain data accuracy and to ensure the correct use of the information we hold.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not specify what these measures are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabasecuritymeasures.png\" alt=\"Alibaba security measures\" class=\"wp-image-17288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabasecuritymeasures.png 698w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabasecuritymeasures-300x134.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Privacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/rulechannel.alibaba.com\/icbu?spm=a2700.galleryofferlist.0.0.1fa713a0rNUhPW&amp;type=detail&amp;ruleId=2034&amp;cId=1306#\/rule\/detail?cId=1306&amp;ruleId=2034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy policy<\/a>, Alibaba explains the kind of data it collects, why, and with whom it shares it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It collects the following personal information about you directly from you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Contact information, e.g., name, address, phone number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Account information, e.g., username, password, gender.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business information, e.g., company name, tax registration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transaction information, e.g., transaction statements, payments, and orders placed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment information, e.g., bank account number, credit card number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Device content, e.g., photos, calendar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Event information, e.g., names, phone numbers, email addresses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It also collects certain information automatically, including device information, online activity information, location, communication information, marketing and advertising information, user-generated content, and other information (like statistics information about the platform).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, it gets data about you from third parties, including social media, group companies and affiliates, verification check companies, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba uses this data for account setup and admin, order processing, logistics, customer support, communications, dispute resolution, personalized marketing, fraud prevention, legal compliance, research, and development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may share it with other users (for transactions), Alibaba affiliates and group companies, service providers, marketing platforms, legal entities, and potential business acquirers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform also says it might provide anonymized data to third parties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing to note is that the instant messaging feature on Alibaba comes from a partner app called DingTalk, which collects your chat information and shares it with Alibaba (for things like dispute resolution, fraud prevention, and improving the platform). This is fairly standard for business platforms, but means your chats may be monitored.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba will keep your data for as long as needed for business\/legal reasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data may be stored\/processed in the US, Germany, Singapore, or China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terms of Service; Didn\u2019t Read (ToS;DR), a project that rates internet services\u2019 terms of service and privacy policies, gives Alibaba a <a href=\"https:\/\/tosdr.org\/en\/service\/2120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cGrade E.\u201d<\/a> This means, \u201cThe terms of service raise very serious concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1017\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatosdr.png\" alt=\"Alibaba Terms of Service; Didn't Read rating (&quot;Grade E&quot;)\" class=\"wp-image-17289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatosdr.png 1017w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatosdr-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabatosdr-768x317.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the (very) long list of concerns is the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alibaba stores your information even if you don\u2019t interact with the service.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It keeps logs for an unspecified time period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its app requires broad device permissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need to provide identifiable information.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It collects many different types of personal data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have a reduced time period to take legal action against the service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the plus side, ToS;DR says that Alibaba provides information about how your personal data is collected and used and allows you to opt out of targeted advertising.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the Common Sense Privacy Program gives Alibaba <a href=\"https:\/\/privacy.commonsense.org\/evaluation\/Alibaba.com---B2B-marketplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a \u201cWarning\u201d rating<\/a>, meaning the service \u201cDoes not meet our recommendations for privacy and security practices.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"165\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaprivacyevaluation-1024x165.png\" alt=\"Alibaba Privacy Evaluation by the Common Sense Privacy Program \" class=\"wp-image-17290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaprivacyevaluation-1024x165.png 1024w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaprivacyevaluation-300x48.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaprivacyevaluation-768x124.png 768w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/alibabaprivacyevaluation.png 1035w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It says that Alibaba shares your personal information for third-party marketing, displays personalized advertising, and allows third parties to collect data for their own purposes. It also says users\u2019 data is used to track and target advertisements on other third-party websites or services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"so-should-you-use-alibaba\">So, Should You Use Alibaba?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alibaba is a legitimate platform, but you still need to be wary of scams.
