You can create large group chats (up to 200,000 members) on Telegram and channels for one-way broadcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telegram offers end-to-end encryption in its &#8220;Secret Chats&#8221; and uses its custom MTProto encryption protocol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also has various other privacy settings (e.g., hiding phone numbers, self-destructing messages, etc.) and features like stickers and social networking elements such as stories and polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was founded in 2013 by Nikolai and Pavel Durov.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telegram is cross-platform and supports Android, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and web browsers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-telegram-a-scam\">Is Telegram a Scam?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No, Telegram <a href=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/is-site-safe\/is-telegram-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is not a scam<\/a>. It is a legitimate instant messaging service.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, scammers love to use Telegram. There are many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Scams\/comments\/1fwudt3\/i_got_scammed_by_telegram_group_i_took_a_loan_for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Telegram scams<\/a> going around.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramgroupscam-1024x159.png\" alt=\"Reddit post about a Telegram group scam\" class=\"wp-image-17119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramgroupscam-1024x159.png 1024w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramgroupscam-300x47.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramgroupscam-768x119.png 768w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramgroupscam.png 1522w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these Telegram scams imitate well-known organizations and brands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/en-it\/blog\/anatomy-of-a-telegram-scam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coinbase warns<\/a> its users that though cryptocurrency communities widely use Telegram, scammers also exploit it due to its ease of impersonation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fraudsters create fake Telegram groups, channels, and profiles that look like they\u2019re from legitimate organizations like Coinbase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the Telegram scams Coinbase warns about include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Employment scams. <\/strong>\u201cCoinbase\u201d recruiters offer fake job opportunities, tricking victims into paying for training\/mining equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Giveaway scams. <\/strong>Scammers impersonate Coinbase executives in fake giveaways to trick victims into sending digital currency to them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tech support scams.<\/strong> Scammers pretend to be from Coinbase customer support, asking for remote access to victims\u2019 Coinbase accounts or sensitive login credentials to steal their Coinbase funds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Telegram gets a 4.2 out of 5.0-star rating (from 15,258,105 ratings and 1b+ downloads) on <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=org.telegram.messenger&amp;hl=en_IE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Play<\/a> and a 4.0 out of 5.0-star rating (from 221,978 ratings) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/telegram-messenger\/id686449807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">App Store<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The app has also been reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/reviews\/telegram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PCMag<\/a>, which rated it 3.5 out of 5.0.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Security<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/privacy\/eu#3-what-personal-data-we-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy policy<\/a>, Telegram says it stores data in encrypted form on servers (e.g., in the Netherlands for UK\/EEA users). End-to-end encrypted data (e.g., secret chats, calls) is processed only on user devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telegram provides two-factor authentication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also apply an additional passcode to the app, which can add another layer of protection when accessing the Telegram app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>External providers handle payment data &#8211; Telegram does not store credit card details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, Norwegian authorities recommended that government officials <a href=\"https:\/\/ilkha.com\/english\/world\/norway-government-warns-officials-against-using-tiktok-telegram-320703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">avoid using Telegram<\/a> on work devices due to security and privacy concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2024\/08\/27\/telegram-which-countries-have-banned-it-or-are-clamping-down-on-it-and-why\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quite a few countries<\/a> have banned or attempted to restrict Telegram.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Privacy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Telegram\u2019s main privacy features is its end-to-end encryption. However, this is only available on &#8220;secret chats.\u201d Standard chats and group conversations are not encrypted (though voice and video calls on Telegram <em>are<\/em> end-to-end encrypted).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of secret chats, these conversations can\u2019t be forwarded, and you can also set messages to self-destruct on both devices so that no trace of them remains on Telegram&#8217;s servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regular chat data is stored on Telegram&#8217;s servers, so the company could potentially access this data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can manage who can view your phone number (everyone, just your contacts, or no one).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, you can regulate who is allowed to add you to groups and channels (e.g., just your contacts).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telegram allows you to set your account to automatically delete itself after a period of inactivity, removing all messages and contacts if you don\u2019t log in within the specified time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal data is retained as long as necessary for service provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, Telegram has been reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/84a878da-3664-11e8-8b98-2f31af407cc8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to reject demands to disclose user information<\/a>. However, there have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/11\/29\/telegram-shares-data-of-users-accused-of-copyright-violation-following-court-order\/?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAApmmFPQ7gNYAIeGRN768fFjJSc9VF1esqc7PtP34svoqr040BtEoppuhM5oQwZq0ufdeikCNFkSXq21_cmy_DrLAqlP2uoQma2u-__pLcPvTRK_sWRWVMKn5Ndz4TjZsNMaeqY6rrHcgpPpCZwWECdWXO7r2op2Wu5_ho_XsD-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports of the company sharing user data<\/a>. There are also concerns that your <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/10\/19\/telegram-is-still-leaking-user-ip-addresses-to-contacts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IP address might be exposed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telegram explains the kind of data it collects in its <a href=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/privacy\/eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy policy<\/a>, as well as what it does with it and whom it shares it with.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, it says it does not use your personal information for ad targeting (and sponsored messages are based solely on public channel topics).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evaluations of Telegram\u2019s privacy policy have produced mixed results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tosdr.org\/en\/service\/1946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Terms of Service; Didn\u2019t Read<\/a> (ToS;DR), an internet project that rates internet services\u2019 terms of service and privacy policies, gives Telegram a \u201cB\u201d rating.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means, \u201cThe terms of service are fair towards the user but they could be improved.\u201d The rating is comparable to Signal and better than WhatsApp.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"291\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacypolicyreview-1024x291.png\" alt=\"Telegram privacy policy review by Terms of Service; Didn't Read\" class=\"wp-image-17120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacypolicyreview-1024x291.png 1024w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacypolicyreview-300x85.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacypolicyreview-768x218.png 768w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacypolicyreview-1536x437.png 1536w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacypolicyreview.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ToS;DR lists as a concern that Telegram could change the terms at any time at their discretion, without notice to the user. It also notes that blocking first-party cookies may limit your ability to use Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/privacy.commonsense.org\/privacy-report\/Telegram-Messenger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Common Sense Privacy Program<\/a>, which focuses on the privacy needs of children and students, rates Telegram at 51 out of 100.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"186\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacyprogramreview-1024x186.png\" alt=\"Privacy evaluation for Telegram by the Common Sense Privacy Program (&quot;Warning&quot; rating)\" class=\"wp-image-17121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacyprogramreview-1024x186.png 1024w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacyprogramreview-300x54.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacyprogramreview-768x139.png 768w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacyprogramreview-1536x278.png 1536w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/telegramprivacyprogramreview.png 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their concerns include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Personally identifiable information (PII) is collected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unclear whether this product allows data collection by third-party advertising or tracking services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unclear whether this product uses data to track and target advertisements on other third-party websites or services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the plus side, the Common Sense Privacy Program says that data is not sold or rented to third parties and is not shared for third-party advertising and\/or marketing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, behavioral or targeted advertising is not displayed and data profiles are not created and used for data enhancement, and\/or targeted advertisements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"so-should-you-use-telegram\">So, Should You Use Telegram?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depends on your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need the highest level of security for every message, consider alternatives that encrypt all your communications by default.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you prioritize features and usability and are comfortable with the trade-offs, Telegram might be a good option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-use-telegram-safely\">How to Use Telegram Safely<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use secret chats for sensitive conversations. <\/strong>Secret chats use end-to-end encryption, prevent message forwarding, and allow you to set messages to self-destruct after a specified period.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turn on two-factor authentication. <\/strong>Activate two-step verification (2FA).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hide your personal information. <\/strong>Adjust your privacy settings to control who can view your phone number, profile picture, and last-seen status, and limit who can add you to groups.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be wary of phishing attempts. <\/strong>Exercise caution with unfamiliar contacts, especially if they send messages containing links or attachments, as these might be phishing attempts or malware.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Control who can forward your messages. <\/strong>Edit your settings to restrict who can forward your messages, reducing the risk of them being shared beyond your intended audience.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protect your Telegram account. <\/strong>Add a passcode lock to stop unauthorized access, and periodically review the &#8216;Active Sessions&#8217;
