The platform does not accept health insurance, which can make it more expensive compared to traditional therapy with insurance coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BetterHelp was founded in 2013 by Alon Matas and Danny Bragonier and was acquired by the telehealth company Teladoc Health in 2015 (but continues to operate under its original name).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-better-help-a-scam\">Is BetterHelp a Scam?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No, BetterHelp is not a scam. It gets a 4.8 out of a 5.0-star rating (from 139.2k ratings) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/betterhelp-therapy\/id995252384\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">App Store<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Security<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BetterHelp explains how it keeps your data secure in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhelp.com\/privacy\/#section1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy policy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It says its platform is certified by HITRUST and that they have an Information Security team that tests internal security at BetterHelp.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, messages between BetterHelp members and their therapists have 256-bit encryption, servers are distributed across multiple Tier 3 AWS Data Centers, its browsing encryption system follows modern practices, databases are encrypted and scrambled, and there are robust monitoring and alerting systems and procedures in place, including automated systems and humans (with security personnel active 24\/7).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"779\" height=\"617\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatasecurity.png\" alt=\"Information on how BetterHelp keeps your data secure\" class=\"wp-image-16932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatasecurity.png 779w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatasecurity-300x238.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatasecurity-768x608.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 779px) 100vw, 779px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/betterhelp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the Mozilla Foundation<\/a>, it\u2019s unclear whether BetterHelp has effective systems to address security vulnerabilities within their app.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the team at Mozilla Foundation reached out to BetterHelp listed privacy contact with questions about their privacy measures, they received no response.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On its <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/datasafety?id=com.betterhelp&amp;hl=en_GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Play page<\/a>, BetterHelp says it encrypts data in transit. data to instruct platforms like Facebook to identify and target similar individuals with advertisements for its services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FTC said BetterHelp did not obtain affirmative express consent from users before disclosing their health data and failed to implement adequate safeguards to protect this information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, BetterHelp denied reports that it shared consumers&#8217; personal and health information with third parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhelp.com\/privacy\/#section1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy policy<\/a>, BetterHelp outlines the kind of data it collects, why, and whom it shares it with.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It collects visitor data (e.g., pages you visit, features you interact with, IP address, etc.), onboarding data, account data (e.g., account name, contact information, demographic information, etc.), user ID, transaction data, engagement data (e.g., how you interact with BetterHelp emails), therapy data (e.g., messages with therapists, journal entries, etc.), therapy quality data (e.g., reviews), customer service and communications data, therapist data (therapist information like therapist\u2019s name &#8211; this is if you want to be a therapist on BetterHelp), BetterHelp business data (for employers and groups), therapist engagement data (for therapists), and clinical health record (minimum information your therapist would need to identify you).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BetterHelp may share this data for legal compliance, to facilitate its operations with service providers, for business operations, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the section \u201cDo you sell my data?\u201d it says, \u201cWe aren\u2019t paid by anyone for any data.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"747\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatasale.png\" alt=\"Information on whether BetterHelp sells your data\" class=\"wp-image-16935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatasale.png 747w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatasale-300x82.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BetterHelp has a pretty detailed data retention section where it outlines how long it shares your data based on who you are and how you\u2019ve engaged with its platform and services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re a member who did not start therapy, then BetterHelp says it will retain your data for three years after your last login date, after which it will erase it. On the other hand, if you did start therapy, your data is retained for 10 years. This is if you do not request data erasure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you request data erasure and did not start therapy, your data is erased within 24 hours of the request. a BetterHelp therapist employed as part of the BetterHelp Clinical Operations Team, and BetterHelp internal Trust and Safety or Legal teams if there\u2019s reason to believe there is a security, legal, or fraud issue happening on a particular account).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On its <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/datasafety?id=com.betterhelp&amp;hl=en_GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Play page<\/a>, BetterHelp says it collects your device or other IDs, messages, personal information (e.g., name, address, email address, phone number, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs), photos and videos, files and docs, financial information, location, health and fitness, audio, and app activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"591\" height=\"818\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatacollected.png\" alt=\"Data collected by the BetterHelp app according to its Google Play page\" class=\"wp-image-16937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatacollected.png 591w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatacollected-217x300.png 217w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It also says it does not share data with third parties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"732\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/betterhelpdatashared.png\" alt=\"&quot;No data shared with third parties,&quot;
