The app also supports group chats, so users can communicate with multiple people at once.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The app can be accessed on smartphones, tablets, and computers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-messenger-safe\">Is Messenger Safe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depends on your definition of \u201csafe.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Messenger offers several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.messenger.com\/privacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safety features<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/03\/end-to-end-encryption-on-messenger-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end-to-end encryption<\/a>, App Lock (which lets you use your device\u2019s face or fingerprint ID when unlocking Messenger), and safety notices (pop-ups in chats that help you spot anything suspicious).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"820\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/messengerendtoendencryption-1-1024x820.png\" alt=\"Messenger end-to-end encryption \" class=\"wp-image-13432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/messengerendtoendencryption-1-1024x820.png 1024w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/messengerendtoendencryption-1-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/messengerendtoendencryption-1-768x615.png 768w, https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/messengerendtoendencryption-1.png 1114w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform enables users to block and report other users who might be sending harmful or malicious communications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The security company UpGuard gives Facebook as a whole a score of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upguard.com\/security-report\/facebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">840 out of 950<\/a>. The company notes that the Content Security Policy is implemented unsafely, increasing the risk of XSS attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook has experienced multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/nordvpn.com\/blog\/facebook-data-breach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data breaches<\/a> in the past, which exposed hundreds of millions of users\u2019 personal data.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scammers often use Facebook Messenger to <a href=\"https:\/\/cybernews.com\/news\/facebook-messenger-phishing-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">send phishing messages<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Messenger safe to use?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The level of safety depends on your interpretation of &#8220;safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal Messenger chats and calls are <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/12\/default-end-to-end-encryption-on-messenger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end-to-end encrypted<\/a>. This means that no one, not even Meta, can see the contents of a message unless you report it to them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta has published <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.fb.com\/2023\/12\/06\/security\/building-end-to-end-security-for-messenger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two whitepapers<\/a> explaining its end-to-end encryption technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other security and privacy features include Disappearing Messages, an App Lock feature that lets users unlock the app with their face or fingerprint, and safety alerts in chats to help identify suspicious activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Users can block or report others who might be engaging in harmful or malicious behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a less positive note, Facebook collects significant data from Messenger users, including <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/end-to-end-encryption-messenger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">metadata<\/a> such as who you&#8217;re communicating with and when.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/joindeleteme.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/metaheadline-1024x512.png\" alt=\"Messenger headline &quot;Meta's Global Encryption Rollout Ups Privacy Stakes &gt; This information can reveal communication patterns and other sensitive insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta also has a long history of data privacy issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Secret Conversation in Messenger safe?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Secret Conversation mode doesn&#8217;t exist anymore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of maintaining a separate mode for Secret Conversations (which was known for end-to-end encryption), Meta has been working towards extending end-to-end encryption to all personal Messenger chats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contents of your messages are not visible to anyone but you and the recipient. Meta can\u2019t see the content of your messages, either.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Facebook can still access messages\u2019 metadata, which can potentially reveal communication patterns and other sensitive insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it safe to send pictures through Facebook Messenger?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, sending pictures through Facebook Messenger in personal chats is generally safe since these are end-to-end encrypted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, users still need to remain cautious when using Messenger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only share sensitive images with people you trust, protect your devices to prevent unauthorized access, and keep up with any updates or changes to Messenger&#8217;s security features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"is-messenger-private\">Is Messenger Private?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depends on your definition of \u201cprivate.\u201d Facebook, in general, doesn\u2019t have a reputation for being \u201cprivate.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Messenger offers some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/messenger-app\/1064701417063145\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy features<\/a>. For example, it allows users to customize privacy settings, such as who can see your active status, send messages, and see your profile information.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as part of the Meta ecosystem, Messenger is subject to Meta\u2019s broader data practices, meaning it collects a significant amount of data from Messenger, including information about your contacts, message content (unless you\u2019re using Secret Conversations), and usage patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Messenger is tightly integrated with Facebook, any data shared on Messenger can potentially be linked to your Facebook profile.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/privacy\/policy\/?entry_point=data_policy_redirect&amp;entry=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">privacy policy<\/a>, Facebook (Meta) outlines what data it collects, what it shares, and with whom.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terms of Service; Didn\u2019t Read (Tos;DR), a project that rates internet services\u2019 terms of service and privacy policies, gives Facebook a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tosdr.org\/en\/service\/182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grade E<\/a>.\u201d This means, \u201cThe terms of service raise very serious concerns.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ToS;DR notes the following as concerns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Users&#8217; identities are used in ads to other users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The service can read private messages and view browser history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deleted content is not really deleted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The service keeps user logs for an undefined period of time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your profile is combined across various products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the plus side, ToS;DR says that the service provides information on how they intend to use your data and does not sell your personal data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Common Sense Privacy Program, which evaluates internet services\u2019 privacy policies, gives Messenger a rating of <a href=\"https:\/\/privacy.commonsense.org\/evaluation\/Messenger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">55% out of 100%<\/a>.
